Elon Musk has said things like:
“You don’t need a college degree to learn stuff.”
“You can learn anything you want.”
“Schools teach you to memorize, not to think.”MY EXPERIENCE
My wife had insisted on sending our daughters to a particular school, despite my strong opposition. She had been influenced by one of her friends from her home country, a woman who had no real understanding of education. That friend had persuaded her by saying, “You must send your daughters to this school where everyone speaks English,” as if speaking English alone defined the quality of education.
I had explained to her that most of those teachers could not even pass the lowest level of government examinations in India. How could such people possibly shape the future of our children? Throughout my academic life, I have consistently been among the top students and have successfully cleared the Civil Services Examination (UPSC) eight times. I had a deep understanding of the education system and its shortcomings. The kind of knowledge and insight I possessed could not have been gained even in a thousand years through such third-rate schools or universities. Ironically, I had been the kind of student who rarely attended classes, yet I had always achieved excellent results.
What You Should Learn from This
- True education means true knowledge, which most school teachers cannot provide. To do so, teachers would have to study thousands of books — something that is far beyond their mindset and capacity.
- Do not be influenced by school buildings, swimming pools, cafeterias, or playgrounds. You are sending your children to school for education, not on a picnic.
- Teachers who have failed to brighten their own future cannot brighten the future of their children.
- Do not be impressed by English-speaking teachers. Many of them know only enough English to influence parents who are eager to enrol their children in their schools.
- Your goal should be true knowledge that leads to wisdom. With wisdom, your child can become anything he or she desires in life.
