Is India safe?

I always tell foreigners, especially women, that if you go anywhere in India and see groups of boys, avoid it—even a normal Indian man or woman would. This Japanese girl had no idea about it and wanted to celebrate Holi with Indians, but she was caught in the hands of a young Indian youth; even she is lucky she got off so cheaply. Don’t wait for tragedy; it’s only a matter of time. A typical Indian does not go out after ten o’clock at night.
TRAVEL ADVICE
- Terrorist activities, violent protests, and armed clashes occur on occasion in India. Avoid congested areas and potential targets. Crowds at religious ceremonies and gatherings can be dangerous as well. Rampages have claimed the lives of many people. Always have an exit strategy in place.
- Areas such as Kashmir, Assam, and some bordering areas should be avoided.
- Women may face more verbal and physical harassment, as well as sexual assault. Even in major cities and tourist areas, avoid travelling alone.
- After consuming spiked drinks or food, travelers have been robbed and assaulted. Leave your food and drinks unattended. Accept no food or drink from strangers. Petty theft is common in crowded places like markets and public transportation. Motorcycle robbers steal bags and jewelry. Carry only what you require. Pay close attention to your possessions.
- Scams are fairly common. These can include impersonating tour guides, skimming ATMs and credit cards, and gaining unauthorized access to government services. If you are a victim of a scam, report it to the police so that your travel insurer can get an official report.
- Severe weather occurs frequently. This includes summer heatwaves and dust storms, as well as monsoon flooding. Check with your tour operator about any potential delays.
DO NOT TRAVEL AT ALL. to the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory, as well as the India-Pakistan border (except the Atari-Wagah border crossing). This does not apply to the Union Territory of Ladakh, which was established in October 2019 as a separate union territory of India from the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.WE RECOMMEND:
RETHINK: .Avoid unnecessary travel. Do your homework and make sure your insurer will cover you. If you must travel, take extra precautions to avoid security and health risks.to the Atari-Wagah border crossing, the northeastern states of Assam (except Guwahati), Nagaland, and Manipur; and Chhattisgarh, as well as neighbouring state border areas.
