Timothy Dexter (January 22, 1747 – October 23, 1806) (self-styled Lord Timothy Dexter) was an American businessman noted for his eccentric behavior and writings. He became wealthy through marriage and a series of improbably successful investments and spent his fortune lavishly.
Most people are unaware of Lord Timothy Dexter. His contemporaries made every effort to keep him out of history.Dexter was illiterate and lacked many of the abilities that other businesses possessed. Unaware of the West Indies’ year-round heat, Dexter bought over 40,000 bed warming pans on the recommendation of his neighbours and shipped them there. Then a neighbour told him Newcastle needed coal. Dexter despatched a shipment without knowing about the massive coal mine in Newcastle. By some miracle, the coal mine went on strike, allowing him to sell for a significant profit..Here you have to understand that Newcastle ships coal everywhere; this was the first time the people of Newcastle had bought coal from Timothy or any outsider. The phrase “coal to Newcastle” originates from this episode.
His affluence was accompanied by a profusion of quirks. His yard was dotted with enormous statues that portrayed a variety of characters, including himself. Eventually, in a desperate attempt to get attention, Dexter staged his own death and threw an extravagant funeral at home. When he saw his wife happy, he left his coffin and went to speak with her. He started to wander around the funeral and say hello to everyone until the attendees noticed he was still alive. He gave himself the title of Lord and told his servants to address him as such in an attempt to blend in.
In a further attempt at fame, a novel was produced. Dexter had little knowledge of the written word, but that did not stop him. “A Pickle for the Knowing Ones” was printed and handed out for free. This book was full of grammatical and spelling errors and featured no punctuation., So he wrote a second book to compensate for the mistakes of the first book, which was not free but was a huge hit. In a second edition, a full page of punctuation was printed, with Dexter instructing readers to, “peper and solt it as they plese.”He sent a full page of punctuation marks on the last page of the second edition and asked every buyer of the second edition to put this punctuation mark as per his choice.
Upon his death, his fame was stuffed away from history. Dexter was buried in a small, unlavish cemetery. As we near the 217th anniversary of his death, we should celebrate someone so eccentric. To quote the preface from his book, “We ne’er shall look upon his like again.”
