It makes me squirm every time I read about the advantages of rising early and how you must do so if you want to be genuinely successful. As a night owl, I work best and most efficiently when the average early riser is dozing off.
Why would you go against the natural world? After all, research has shown that we night owls are genetically and biologically predisposed to be this way. Hence, for all you night owls out there, here are many excellent reasons to support your late-night productive habits, believe in your internal clock, and disregard any doubters.
- YOU ARE MOST LIKELY A WORKHORSE. According to a study conducted at the University of Liege in Belgium, night owls maintain their mental alertness for a lot longer than their early bird colleagues do.
- YOU HAVE A HIGHER CHANCE OF BEING ENTREPRENEURIAL. Night owls are more likely to take risks and have the makings of successful entrepreneurs, according to research from the University of Chicago.
- YOU PROBABLY HAVE MORE STRENGTH. The motor cortex and spinal cord of night owls become more excitable in the late evening, according to studies. This is another compelling argument in favour of defying convention and exercising at night rather than in the morning. If you’re anything like me, you don’t want to be bench-pressing absurdly heavyweights in the morning.
- YOU HAVE AS MUCH FREEDOM AS A BIRD.: You are free to work, play, and work some more because there aren’t any late-night meetings or appointments, which offers a tonne of freedom.
- YOUR CREATIVE POTENTIAL IS HIGHER. Researchers at a university in Milan have observed an increase in creativity among night owls, observing that they are far more likely than their early-riser colleagues to come up with novel solutions.
- YOU’RE USUALLY CONSIDERABLY MORE AT EASE. Early risers often have greater cortisol levels, which remain elevated throughout the day, according to British researchers. For night owls, this is not the case.
- YOUR IQ MIGHT BE HIGHER THAN AVERAGE. According to a study by Satoshi Kanazawa, highly brilliant kids often grow up to be nocturnal adults who like to stay up late and sleep seven days a week. Another study at the University of Madrid discovered that night owls scored higher on IQ tests and even made more money than early risers.
DO SMART PEOPLE SLEEP LESS? PSYCHOLOGY TODAY REPORTED THAT INTELLIGENT PEOPLE ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE NOCTURNAL, WITH THOSE WHO HAVE A HIGHER IQ SLEEPING LATE ON BOTH WEEKDAYS AND WEEKENDS.
