R K Narayan experienced a setback when he failed his English university entrance exam at the age of 18. His life will eventually change as a result of this gap year. Following his relocation to Lakshmipuram, Narayan started an unsuccessful English teaching career in Channapatna before returning to Mysuru. Though they were never published, he authored novels and stories while in college and shared them with pals over tea at neighbourhood cafes. Years later, he instructed a friend in the UK to either find a publisher or toss the manuscript of “Swami and Friends” into the Thames.
He got it from his acquaintance, who was fortunate enough to know renowned author Graham Greene. Greene promoted its release, which marked the beginning of Narayan’s novel writing career. ‘Swami and Friends’, a semi-autobiographical novel based on his youth, was published in 1935. Greene became well-known as a writer after The Bachelor of Arts, which was published in 1937 with his help. His father’s death in 1937 and his wife’s death two years later were personal tragedies. Narayan found comfort in writing despite the heartache, and it was during this time that he wrote some of his most notable novels.
The spirit of everyday life in a fictional village was captured in Malgudi Days, which was published in 1942. Later, in the 1980s, the collection was turned into a popular Doordarshan television series. In 1960, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his book The Guide. At the age of 94, R K Narayan passed away in 2001, leaving behind a legacy of classic tales that readers all over the world still find compelling.
